On Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a holiday where we reflect on the legacy of man who played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement – Mexican-born Jorge García was deported, separated from his wife and two children. Through tears, the family embraced, knowing their lives would change forever. García attempted to adjust his status since his arrival to the United States nearly 30 years ago, but due to a lack of paths, he had no choice but to live undocumented. After years of checking in with immigration officials, García – who was too old to qualify for DACA – was told in November that he’d have to leave the country where he had grown up. After an outpouring of support, journalist Niraj Warikoo – who covered the news for the Detroit Free Press – received an email from Chamillionaire asking how he could help.

“I’m a musician and tech investor and I’m looking to talk to them to see how I can help with financial support in Jorge’s absence,” he wrote. “It would be great if you could possibly point me in the right direction.”

The Houston rapper has since spoken to the press about the email. “(When I sent the email) I assumed this would be a private conversation, and I was hoping that I would be connected to the family, but unfortunately, neither happened,” Chamillionaire told Chron.com on Thursday. “It looks like the story of this family’s unfortunate situation is gaining some traction, so at the least, I’m happy to see their story getting the attention that it deserves.”
