“Surf” may not be the first word that comes to mind in a word association game with “Peru,” but when it comes to Chicha Libre, there’s no separating the two. The Brooklyn band started as an homage to Amazonian groups of 1970s Peru who mixed all sorts of craziness – think Colombian cumbia with a psychedelic twist, and surf guitars/electric organs thrown in for good measure.
Here in New York, we’ve gotten a little spoiled with Chicha Libre’s weekly gigs at Barbes, but next week they’re hitting the West for a show in San Francisco and two in L.A. (one with Very Be Careful!). They even recruited Peruvian guitar legend Jose Luis Carballo for the El Cid show in Los Angeles. To get you warmed up for next week’s concerts, we rounded up a couple of FREE downloads, one from the Chicha guys and another from The Cuban Cowboys, who will be at the SF show. You can thanks us later.
