Fashion really does care. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Partnership for a New American Economy have teamed up with 11 designers, retailers, and wholesalers (including Oscar de la Renta, Saks, and Rent the Runway) to make the case for proper immigration reform. Their stance is that new (and more “sensible”) immigration reform will further domestic manufacturing and help grow American economy. It will also help speed up the visa process. Now that certainly is sensible. Especially in a city like New York where the fashion industry (according to the press release) accounts for about 165,000 people’s employment. Designer Diane von Furstenberg said it best:

“Fashion’s next great talent could be born anywhere in the world.” said Belgian-born Diane von Furstenberg, fashion designer and President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “America was built by immigrants – and if we want to stay the global leader in fashion, then America must continue to welcome immigrants who bring to the industry new ideas, new businesses, and new energy.”
