Starting anew in the United States is challenging. But at 59 years old, a Mexican man has successfully reached his dreams. In a touching Facebook post, his daughter, Jacqueline Marquez, explains that her dad, Gerardo, earned a bachelor’s degree and graduated with honors. “He came to this country with no money, no papers, no English, and worked for years to support us,” she wrote. “Went from being a janitor/dishwasher to a future teacher. He’s truly the American Dream and the most amazing dad. He left everything in Mexico to give my family a better life, and it’s an honor to watch him walk the stage just like he did for my brother and I.”
Her dad, who offered her emotional support when she struggled through school, graduated with a 3.8 GPA. The post has made its way onto UndocuMedia’s Facebook account, where people are celebrating his accomplishments and remembering that it’s never too late to go to school.
