Lin-Manuel Miranda and the ‘Hamilton’ Crew Pretty Much Mic Drop at BET Cypher

Lin-Manuel Miranda is no stranger to a good ol’ fashion freestyle. That’s why when BET called Miranda to invite him and his Hamilton cast members Renée-Elise Goldsberry and Daveed Diggs to get on their own first-ever Broadway cypher with Hamilton soundtrack gurus Black Thought and Questlove, Miranda said, “I will literally come to bring the drama.” At least, that’s how I played it out in my head.

Tuesday night at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, the Hamilton crew premiered their Broadway cypher crossover with five minutes of pure theater prowess. If the cyphers had a mic drop award, it would go to the leader of the pack and Hamilton’s star Lin-Manuel Miranda. Whenever you manage to put Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and Tony (EGOT) in one sentence, those are the only name drops you need. “I got a Grammy, got a Tony, got an Emmy, dammit homie, somebody show me the way to the Oscars.” Just a slight humble brag from a Nuyorican MacArthur Genius.
