Attention all bookworms! The Miami Book Fair International kicked off at Miami Dade College this Sunday the 11th, and will run all week until November 18th. This is the 29th year of the Fair, which is widely considered to be the largest and most relevant book-oriented event in the United States.
A large draw of the Book Fair is from its spotlight on Latin American writers, and Book Fair director Alina Interian hopes that about 200,000 people from the United States and other countries will visit the fair this year to attend the dozens of scheduled literary events. Some of the main events include – in Spanish – the Trans-Atlantic Conversations series, organized with the collaboration of the Centro Cultural Español de Miami (CCEM) with the aim of bringing together writers from both sides of the Atlantic. Another popular event is their Evenings With Series, which will include readings by Junot Diaz, Sandra Cisneros, Nélida Piñón and many more throughout the week.
On Friday, the Street Fair which includes the Festival of Authors, will begin with over 350 authors reading and discussing their work, including the Latin American and Spanish authors who are participating in the IberoAmerican Authors Program. The top authors included in this program are Peru’s Santiago Roncagliolo and Jaime Bayle, Cuban exile writer and journalist Carlos Alberto Montaner, and Mexican historian and intellectual Enrique Krauze, among others. The Street Fair also hosts music at The World Stage , where you can catch jazz, hip-hop, African, and a free performance from one of our favorite bands, Locos Por Juana.
