I caught this new Rakim y Ken-Y video (for “Te Regalo Amores”) the other night, and raised an eyebrow or two.
This duo seems to be pioneering a whole new reggaeton aesthetic, though I don’t think it’s going to stick. Gone is the urban environment (they’re in the countryside, on what I think you’d call an “estate”), the bling-bling, the cars (they ride horses…. and fly a helicopter), and the ass shaking ladies of your typical reggaeton video. Instead, these two seem to be living out some sort of Ralph Lauren ad/preppy fantasy. It’s really pretty ridiculous.
And the song is more merengue/vallenato than reggaeton, which is interesting in and of itself.
Anyway, watch, gawk, giggle, and analyze away…..
(Also, watching Rakim “dance” is extremely painful.)
