The Red Bull Music Academy’s Culture Clash series makes its way to California for its first appearance in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 1st at The Regency Ballroom, with host/Oakland native Sway Calloway.

The Culture Clash series is modeled after Jamaican sound clashes; as RBMA puts it, “each collective will be required to bring their own sound system and set up shop on one of four individual stages. It’s not a DJ competition or a band competition, it’s about who has the heaviest sound, the best tunes, the most exclusive dubplates and greatest special guests.” It’s all done in good spirits, with four different local teams celebrating different components of Bay Area culture.

The crew from Tormenta Tropical— a monthly event presented by the Bersa Discos record label since 2007–will be in the Latino corner, with Oro11, Deejay Theory, Shawn Reynaldo, Paul Devro, Luis Cardenas, and Ultra Cat. Also in the running are roots, reggae, and dancehall representation from Dub Mission (DJ Sep, J Boogie, Maneesh the Twister, Kush Aurora, and Vinnie Esparza), battle/turntablist collective Triple Threat (Shortkut, Apollo, Vinroc, and Fran Boogie), and house music label and crew Dirtybird, headed up by Claude VonStroke.
