In a rather interesting bit of casting news, Ricky Martin has been tapped to play El Che in the 2012 revival of Evita, a role originated by Mandy “Inigo Montoya” Patinkin and brought to the silver screen by Antonio Banderas in the 1996 film version. More exciting to this theater dork is that the titular role will be played by Elena Roger, meaning an Argentine actress will finally be playing this most Argentine of icons on Broadway after her successful run in the role on the West End in London. Juan Peron will be interpreted by Michael Cerveris.

Martin’s casting isn’t (only) a stunt to boost ticket sales – Ricky had a successful turn as Marius in Les Miserables in the mid-nineties, and his acting chops have been tested both in television soap operas and in convincing female fans he was straight for so long.

This production has all the makings of a hit. I’m just hoping they sing “Argentina” as it’s pronounced in Spanish, and not with the English hard G as so many boludos have in past productions.

Anyway, here’s a video from the 1996 movie, ’cause why not?
