Legendary Mexican author Carlos Fuentes passed away today at the age of 83 (nearly 84). He was best known for his novels – which totalled 24 – but he was also a prolific writer of short stories, movies, plays, and essays. He also served as Mexican ambassador to France. Along with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar, Mario Vargas Llosa and Jorge Luis Borges, Fuentes was an important part of the Latin American literary boom of the 1960’s.
