Chicago’s creative scene is a notorious boys club, but that’s never been a barrier for Southside Mexicana, Esperanza Rosas – better known by her artist name, Runsy.

The multifaceted artist — who designs, illustrates and also partakes in photography and installation work – has made a name for herself in the Windy City by being an unapologetically Mexican and femme-leaning force in Chicago’s art scene. She’s known for her minimalistic yet bold illustrations; her images are taken from old family photos, which depict relatable aspects of growing up Latina. In them, iconic and traditional symbols of Mexicanidad such as botas, calaveras, tattoos and family members are contrasted against her signature use of a pastel pink background. When she’s not updating Instagram with her latest work (not limited to collaborations with Chief Keef, Lollapalooza and Nike Chicago) her 6K plus Instagram following eagerly awaits her fit pics (her shoe game is another level.)

There’s a point and purpose to everything that makes up Runsy’s work and persona and it all goes back to being present as an artist. We’re not the only ones taking notice – she was recently one of five creatives highlighted by Red Bull SoundSelect for their upcoming monthlong 30 Days in Chicago event. Aside from Red Bull shining the spotlight on the intensely diverse roundup of music artists coming through Chitown during the month of November, they also chose to highlight a handful of visual artists stamping the city’s art scene as one to not sleep on. Runsy’s inclusion in this roundup is a testament to the work she’s doing carving out a lane for new generation of Mexican-American artists — unafraid to push the boundaries set against her but never afraid to display who she is.
