Growing up Maya: Prehispanic Head Shaping Practices, Social Meanings and Ethnicity

Do you have Thursday off for some reason and want to do something interesting? Head over to the ASU main campus for a cool lecture by Dr. Viera Tiesler of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán…Bomba! The Mayan civilization is known for intricate art, architecture, and a far-reaching influence beyond the modern Maya peoples into greater social society. Dr. Tiesler, who specializes in the study of fossilization, will explore this in her lecture.

Presentation of “Al Trote” Poetry and Literature Magazine

Teatro Meshico presents the launch of “Al Trote” revista de poesía y literatura. In this ceremony, the theatre company will be honoring the memory of Miguel Méndez, Mexican American author of Peregrinos de Aztlán. There will also be presentations by writer, editor, theatre instructor and arts promoter, Mario Zapién, and music by Rubén Izquierdo and his guitar.

Unveiling of Aztec Smurf’s latest mural

On December 31, 2013, Aztec Smurf began documenting the progress of his newest mural in Tempe and now it’s complete. To officially unveil what is now the largest mural in the city, the Mark Apartments, who commissioned the work, are hosting a big festejation! There will be food trucks, music and, of course, the chance to talk to the artist. Also, if you’re an ASU student, free food for you if you show your student ID! Check out the progress of Aztec Smurf’s four-story tall Gila Monster on the artist’s twitter feed (twitter.com/AztecSmurf)
