On Presidents day, Puerto Rico unveiled this statue of President Barack Obama, as well as a statue of President Lyndon B. Johnson, on the Avenue of Heroes outside the island’s Capital Building. The Avenue of Heroes celebrates every US President to visit the island.
It’s politically complex, and we’re not (usually) really a news blog, but it’s worth seeing the statue, and that even amidst the controversy over the island’s status Puerto Rico has chosen to honor a President that its current government stands at political odds with when, here on the mainland, he’s so often afforded open disrespect by his opponents.
