Why is it So Hard For the Deen Family to Not be Racist?

In further proof that Paula Deen doesn’t understand what racism is or how to just stop, this morning she tweeted out an old photo of her family dressed up as the cast from I Love Lucy (for God knows what reason). The image featured her son Bobby donning some problematic brownface for the part of Desi Arnaz – but apparently he didn’t commit to the #brownneck or #brownhands… because as you can see from the image below, those are still white. That’s just sloppy racism. His whole costume is lazy. He didn’t even try to wear ’50s style clothes. No one is going to see him and automatically think this is Ricky Ricardo.

There’s also so many other things wrong with this picture. First of all, Deens, have you seen Desi? He is a fair-skinned Latino, which you can tell even by just looking at his black-and-white photos. Second, Paula, did you learn nothing from the n-word debacle? At this point you should listen to your instincts when it comes to interacting with any other race/culture and then just do the exact opposite of that.

Probably the best way to know if you’re going to insult someone is common sense, but if you lack that, try the Internet. Or try this post that explains why dressing up like other races is a dick move.

In case you’re wondering, Paula did take down the post, so the apology should be coming in 3, 2….
