The biggest movie on Disney+ right now that’s breaking records is led by a Latina actress. Descendants: The Rise of Red, which came out earlier this month on the streaming platform, stars Venezuelan-American actress Kylie Cantrall. In an interview with Remezcla, Cantrall opened up about joining the beloved Disney franchise, the movie’s success, and representing her heritage in Hollywood.

“Oh my God! It’s breaking records, which is insane,” Cantrall says. “In the movie’s first three days out, we beat the records for any other Disney film. Even [The Eras Tour movie] by Taylor Swift, which is so mind-blowing. I can’t believe it. It’s crazy!”

After debuting on Disney+ on July 12, Descendants: The Rise of Red broke the record for the most-viewed premiere from Disney Branded Television on the platform. Following its first three days of availability, the movie was watched over 6.7 million times. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which was released on Disney+ in March, opened with 4.6 million views in its first three days out. The latest installment of the Descendants series stars Cantrall, who is Venezuelan on her mother’s side. As an actress, singer, and dancer, she appeared in other Disney shows like Gabby Duran & the Unsittables and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

“For me, getting to represent my Venezuelan culture is incredible,” she says. “It’s very special. I want to inspire all the chicas to push themselves, practice, and all of your dreams can become a reality. Anything is possible.”

Descendants: The Rise of Red will also premiere on Disney Channel on Aug. 9. It’s the fourth movie in the supernatural musical franchise. The first Descendants movie was released in 2015 and it launched the careers of Sofia Carson and Dove Cameron. The original trilogy wrapped in 2019. Cantrall is now leading the spin-off and playing the character of Red, who is the teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts. She sings throughout the movie in songs like “What’s My Name,” “Red,” and a cover of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation.”

“It was amazing getting to work in the movie,” she says. “The movie is an epic musical with dancing, songs, and action scenes. It was a little bit of everything. It was so fun!”

Last month, Cantrall voiced the superhero White Tiger in the Marvel animated series Spidey and His Amazing Friends. She previously teamed up with EDM acts R3hab and Jonas Blue for the song “Sad Boy,” which also featured Ava Max.
