I am a nerd. Let’s get that out of the way. Nerd. Me. Got it? Okay.
For four seasons of excellent television (okay, only two or three were excellent…) the venerable Edward James Olmos inhabited the uniform of Admiral William Adama on the Sci-Fi Channel’s (now known as the SyFy Channel) beloved, critically acclaimed reboot of Battlestar Galactica. In webisodes that fleshed out some of the character’s backstory, a much younger Adama was portrayed by Nico Cortez. In the unfortunately canceled prequel series Caprica, Joseph Adama, William’s lawyer father, is played by none other than Esai Morales.
But now the SyFy channel has announced the cast of its latest BSG spinoff, another prequel series called Blood and Chrome. The young Adama will be played by an English chap named Luke Pasqualino. Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Pasqualino is great on the original British Skins. He sure looks the part. He’s probably fantastic in the role– and, well, isn’t that what really matters? Sure. But it’s been nice to see Latino actors helm quality television shows, a rarity in general and in this genre especially.
Even if their characters are technically not Latino at all but from other planets entirely. Baby steps.
