Netflix Announces ‘OITNB’ Season 5 Premiere Date and Teaser Trailer

Last year the Season 4 finale of Orange Is the New Black left us at a moment of excruciating suspense: racial tensions are at an all-time high, there’s a brewing prison uprising, and Daya has a gun in her hands. Then, just like that, the show cut to credits and we were left to wait an endless 12 months to see how everything plays out.

Well, that year isn’t quite up yet, but at last we’re starting to get some rumblings about the much-anticipated Season 5. At a press event last week, actress Danielle Brooks revealed that the season would adopt a novel narrative format that focuses on an intense 72-hour period (rather than playing out over several weeks as it has in the past.) At the moment we don’t know much more than that, but Netflix has dropped a 15 second teaser to get our blood pressure surging ahead of the June 9 premiere.

Featuring little more than close ups on our favorite Litchfield inmates, the brief montage ends on a shot of Daya pointing the pistol directly at the camera, apparently to remind us how high the stakes are for the coming episodes. What exactly goes down in those 72 hours is anybody’s guess, but with so many prison riots and strikes in the news of late, you can probably just look to the headlines for some clues.

Season five of Orange is the New Black drops June 9, 2017 on Netflix.
