NYC: 5 Ways to Kickstart Your Morning

Mornings are about more than just waking up – they’re about starting early to make the most of every moment.

And where better to wake up than the City That Never Sleeps? Here are some suggestions for ways to kickstart your day:

1. Get Juicy

4141 Broadway

Malecon No. 2
764 Amsterdam Avenue

El Malecon is best known for greasy-spoon, stick-to-your-ribs Dominican food –  but one of the hidden gems on its extensive menu are their batidos and jugos naturales. In a town where it’s virtually impossible to find a smoothie that doesn’t set you back $8.50, El Malecon is refreshing for your mouth and your wallet; they offer a range of delicious tropical flavors for only $3.50. With locations on both the East and West sides, there’s no excuse to miss it. Plus, if you’ve never had a morir soñando (mixed OJ & milk), you’re seriously missing out. Skip your morning coffee stop by to load up on some fruity, frothy goodness that will get your day started right.

2. Get moving

Citi Bike
Throughout the city

Morning rush hour may just be our least favorite part of getting the day started. Luckily, avoiding traffic and packed subway cars just got easier thanks to Citi Bike’s recently launched bike share program. With stations cropping up everywhere, pretty much anyone can now cruise into a bike lane and give the hipster fixie set a run for their money.  We recommend saddling up and hitting some of the daylight parties in Remezcla’s Summer Concert Guide: Julieta Venegas, Alex Andwandter, Gaby Amarantos, Emicida, DJ Greg Caz and more are all performing this summer.

3. Get some culture

El Museo del Barrio’s Walking Tours
1230 5th Avenue
Beginning May 25th

Okay mijos, it’s springtime which means get off your trasero and stretch those legs! Join the Museo del Barrio Walking Tour as you’re shown what makes East Harlem so original. Rich in history, the two hour walk will take guests around el Barrios public art, beautiful community gardens, vibrant store fronts and more! Space is limited so get your tickets online! Don’t worry if you miss the one: these walks will be running throughout the summer from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM, making them the perfect way to take in a beautiful morning.

4. Dance!

MoMA PS1 Warms Up

MoMa PS1
22-25 Jackson Avenue
The Martinez Brothers: July 6th
Empress Of: August 24th

MoMa’s amazing PS1 Warm Up lineup for summer 2013 has just been announced, and there are some super amazing acts coming our way! For every Saturday between June 29 through September 7, some of the hottest DJs and performers from all over the world will be riling up the daytime dance floor in LIC.

On July 6, The Martinez Brothers take the stage; they’re a Bronx-based Nuyorican EDM duo that started playing in their teens – when they were too young to even get into the clubs where they were performing – and have gone on to play Ibiza, Dubai…the whole friggin’ world. They’ll play alongside DJ Qu, and Anthony Naples, all producers from NYC. Grab your Mountain Dew Kickstart and let the Martinez Brothers show you how they conquered the planet.

On August 24th, Brooklyn-based artist Empress Of will perform her tantalizing tunes alongside Caribou, Museum of Love from DFA, Terreke, and Pional.

5. Catch a Concert

Radio Jarocho @ Summerstage
Sunset Park
July 31st
and August 1st, 10:30 AM

Radio Jarocho plays son jarocho music fashioned after the towns, musicians, and swampy countryside that created it in Veracruz, Mexico. They also write their own songs inspired by this popular genre and tailor them with assorted influences, creating a contemporary repertoire that captures the spirit of the traditional style. The band championed son jarocho by performing over the past decade in dozens of concerts and fandangos in several cities, including New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Boston.
