Jam Out with Santa Cecilia!

On Wednesday, November 24th, Mexicans celebrate Santa Cecilia (shown above having one of her signature jam sessions with an angel), the patron saint of music and, in this case, de los mariachis. She’s not just represented south of the border, of course. Musical greats like Purcell, Handel, and, well, Simon & Garfunkel, have all written odes to her.

But it’s Mexican culture that still shows her the most love each year with concerts and festivals. Every year, the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (60th Street and 5th Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn) celebrates with a huge event, including food and a mariachi mass (this year, 32 mariachi bands will be there!). Food is Art has organized a dinner at Park Slope’s delicious Fonda restaurant to follow. Check it out!
