El Greco in New York
El Greco was a master painter known as one of the key figures in the Spanish Renaissance. He broke the rules of traditional painting by elongating his figures and preferring to connote grace rather than realism. It’s rare for El Greco’s work to be exhibited outside of Europe. With that said, the Met is honoring the 400th year after his death with an exhibit that will be open to the public until February 1st, 2015. Catch this unique collection of paintings while you can.

Bone Razed
Artists who are New York City natives have come together to weigh in on the issue of gentrification in this 2-day exhibit taking place Friday and Saturday. Jackson Heights, a neighborhood in Queens known for its diverse immigrant communities has begun to show the early signs of gentrification. Working class families and small businesses are the first to be affected by the economic and political stirrings powered by gentrification, which usually means these entities are uprooted from their longtime homes rather quickly. This show exclusively features artists who grew up in NYC and aims to shed light on this pressing issue. Artists in the show are Maria Inés Toro Luna, Kevin Marin, Coco Lopez, H H Coatl, Arkadiy Ryabin, Gabino Castelán, and Melissa Misla. The opening reception for Bone Razed is this Friday from 6 to 9pm at A&M Studios.

I Use People for What I Write
This Wednesday is the closing reception for Itziar Barrio’s show at El Museo de los Sures in Williamsburg. Barrio has cement sculptures, silkscreens on latex, and video installations that revolve around the concepts of power and desire — all part of another project of hers titled The Perils of Obedience. Barrio is originally from Spain and is wrapping up her 3-month residency at El Museo de los Sures, a gallery and organization that aims to preserve the history of South Williamsburg. The reception will be Wednesday, November 19th, from 6:30 to 8:30pm.
