Mathieu K. Abonnenc and Ektor Garcia
Referencing his cultural roots in both Mexico and California, artist Ektor Garcia makes sculptures made from things like animal bones, corn and beeswax – natural elements used in objects easily found on religious altars or as household items in his area of origin. He’s also known for his corn tortillas laser cut into the image of lace doilies. The reception for his show alongside artist Mathieu K. Abonnenc is Wednesday, January 13th from 6 to 8pm.

Antarctica
Collaborative duo Lucy + Jorge Orta use ecological and environmental issues as the conceptual basis for their art installations and are showing in New York for the first time beginning this week. Their exhibit will focus on Antarctica and how its extreme environment facilitates solidarity and cooperation between communities. The installation is an “Antarctic Village” of dome-like structures that highlight the unified and utopian aspects of the continent. Visit the opening this Thursday January 14th from 6 to 8pm.

Jigger Cruz
Filipino artist Jigger Cruz wants us to forget our engrained ideas about how to look at art in his new show ‘Smudging Dirty Little Touch.’ His work uses abstraction and automatic gestures and creates layered paintings with bubbled textures. Challenge the constraints of your art-viewing eyes at the opening reception this Thursday January 14th from 6 to 8pm.
