Primitivo by Saner
Mexican artist Edgar Flores aka Saner from D.F. paints large scale portraits of people wearing Nahuale masks– masks said to have the ability to transform people into animals. His pieces blend images from Precolumbian worlds and those of the modern day calling into question the moral and political superiority of each society. This is his first solo show at Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea, which is not to be missed. The show will be up until February 7th.

Syntaxa by Juanli Carrión
Following his public art installation Outer Seed Shadow #01, Juanli Carrión will present a series of drawings and a video in a solo exhibition at Y Gallery that provides an artistic analysis of immigration in the U.S. The drawings in Syntaxa are botanical illustrations composed out of the 921,402 characters from the Immigration and Nationality Act– a law that constitutes most of the United States’ immigration law. The whole concept of the show is based off the ideas generated by his geopolitical garden sculptures and the stories from NYC immigrants that helped create them. Drawings From the South of America II, Chapter: Venezuela
Henrique Faria is featuring artists from Venezuela in a new show of drawings opening this week on January 15th. Some artists include Mercedes Elena González, José Gabriel Fernández, Marisol (who’s solo show at Museo del Barrio is closing this week. Don’t miss it!!) Carlos Zerpa, Pedro Tagliafico, Yeni and Nan, Gego, Roberto Obregón, Claudia Perna, Gerd Leufert, Héctor Fuenmayor and others. It’s a really cool compilation of renowned and under the radar Venezuelan artists, so check it out. The show will be up until February 7th.
