Profil Perdu
A gang of Latin American artists and one Italian artist will be showing work at Gallery MC this month and through Valentine’s day. One of my favorite artists in the show, Mexican artist Eugenia Martinez uses vintage portraits from colonial Mexico, which she encircles with sentences that swirl on top of the images. Another artist featured in Profil Perdu (French for lost profile) is Floria Gonzalez known for her sometimes disturbing and highly imaginative photography. She made a video about losing time and memory for the show. Other artists are Alessia Armeni, Nadia Baram, Marcos Castro, Daniel Horowitz, Adriana Minoliti, Rafael Uriegas, Leslie Sardiñas and Alexis Zambrano. I’m super excited to see their contemporary works.

Pablo Helguera: Strange Oasis
In contemporary artist Pablo Helguera’s new installation for Kent Fine Art, you are projected into history — it is 1836, before the U.S.-Mexico war. In the setup of his piece ‘Nuevo Romancero Nuevomejicano’ you’re placed at a gambling table in an illegal casino in pre-war New Mexico. In the interactive installation, visitors play card games that reveal their future through legends based on this history. The reception is Friday January 30th from 6 to 8pm, but if you can’t make it then, the interactivity will be taking place Saturday afternoons from 12-5pm.

Daniel Albrigo
Daniel Albrigo is the inaugural artist at the new Three Kings Studio in Greenpoint. Albrigo is a local New York artist who is also a well-known tattooer with a seat at the Three Kings Tattoo parlour– the shop connected with the gallery. Some of Albrigo’s paintings involve realistic portrayals of bizarre objects like false teeth while other drawings have disparate elements with pop culture references like the iconic smiley-faces of the 70s or portrayals of Felix the cat. You can see the tattoo art influence in some of his work while other pieces have a more abstract quality. You can see new works of his until February 22nd. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday 2 to 8pm.
