Portraiture Now: Staging the Self
Six Latino artists made a series of their interpretation of the theme of portraiture, and the products couldn’t have been more varied. There’s collage work, huge paintings made with heavy brushstrokes, photographs, and mixed media pieces that combine fabrics and other objects. The artists David Antonio Cruz, Carlee Fernandez, María Martínez-Cañas, Rachelle Mozman, Karen Miranda Rivadeneira, and Michael Vasquez are challenging the idea of traditional portraiture and instead infusing it with a dynamic complexity. It has more of a quality of storytelling than static identity. It will be up until October 17th.

Three Women
After living in the Ecuadorian jungle for seven years, Alonsa Guevara cannot stop painting the luscious fruits of the forest. She paints detailed pictures of real and imaginary fruits that she deems “portraits.” The fruits have a life and identity of their own, and are painted referencing the work of Judy Chicago. Nadine Faraj’s watercolors and Patty Horing’s painted family portraits are also a part of the show. You can see the work until October 10th.

Enrique Celaya Martinez
As an author, Cuban artist Enrique Celaya Martinez uses his experience in the the realms of literature, philosophy, and religion to create visuals that use the same intellectual devices. In this two-part exhibition, Celaya Martinez blends ideas about the symbolism of land and sea through paintings, sculptures, needlepoint, installation, and writing. The land symbolically represents what is conquerable and acknowledged while the sea is a metaphor for the unknown future. The two shows are at different venues in Chelsea.
