Bronx Photo League: Jerome Avenue Workers Project

As we see even the most obscure neighborhoods in New York City fall to the pressures of gentrification, no borough is safe. The first exhibition by the Bronx Photo League aims to document the changes in areas of the Bronx as property developments rise and a new crop of residents move in. This exhibit focuses on the workers of Jerome Avenue– home to one of the few pockets of working class communities in NYC. The photographs will be silver gelatin darkroom prints. The reception is this Saturday October 3rd at from 5 to 8pm.

The Hard Corps: clubs, sex, activism, bodies

Coinciding with the art show Party Out of Bounds: Nightlife as Activism since 1980, is a panel discussion about how the art world and the activist worlds collided at the height of the AIDS crisis, when sex positive parties in nightlife were providing safe spaces for all people. The AIDS crisis hit the Latino community hard, and a disproportionate amount of Latinos were struck with the disease. The need for advocacy programs gave rise to organizations like the Latino Commission on AIDS, which helped meet the need for HIV prevention. Julie Tolentino, Aldo Hernandez, and Tei Okamoto are the panelists on the board and will be speaking about the community building aspects within these alternative parties. The talk is Thursday, October 1st, from 6 to 8pm and the art show will be up until October 10th.

KATHARSIS by Rodrigo Franzão

Brazilian artist Rodrigo Franzão has his first show in the U.S. at the Marquis Gallery at the National Arts Club. Franzão’s work uses found materials in his geometric pieces that often protrude from the walls in a sculptural fashion. Some works even seem to have appendages. Check his work out at the reception Monday, September 28th from 6 to 8pm.
