Eccentric Stimuli

The playful biogeomorphic abstract paintings by El Paso-born artist Paul Henry Ramirez will be on view at Ryan Lee gallery this Thursday through October 24th. Ramirez is kind of a big deal in the Latino art world, as he was recently part of the Smithsonian’s exhibit “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art” – a varied collection of works from modern and contemporary Latino artists. Stop by the reception this Thursday, September 10th from 6 to 8pm to grab a glass of vino and see the fluorescent eccentricity and movement in his pieces.

Perras y Putas

Spanish photographer Yapci Ramos is the artist behind the project Perras y Putas – a series of photographs documenting sex workers in their personal and intimate spaces across the globe. Part of the work involves the artist spending time with her sitters in order to capture a genuine glimpse of their reality. Photographers who do projects like this run the risk of looking exploitative when they capitalize off the visual grit of someone else’s job and/or lifestyle because of its taboo quality. However, there are ways to approach projects like these with respect. Check out the photo opening this Saturday, September 12th from 6 to 8pm, and see what you think.

Heads Will Roll

Max de Esteban is showing the fourth installment of his Proposition Series of photo collages at Klompching gallery in Brooklyn. In this show he pushes the viewer to consider our society’s state of anxiety caused by mass media’s fixation on war, violence, and disaster. The exhibit consists of eight bold and striking photo collages. The artist’s reception will be this Saturday, September 12th from 6 to 8pm.
