Twitter’s Best Reactions to Rumors El Chapo Escaped for the Third Time

After an escape that left the world flabbergasted – and purportedly involved a 20-by-20-inch tunnel that fed directly into his prison cell and an underground motorcycle ride – Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo was recaptured in January of this year.

The saga of both his escape and recapture, which also drew in Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo, is already stranger than fiction. Which is why it’s perhaps a little too easy to believe unsubstantiated rumors when it comes to his whereabouts. Today, for a brief moment, the entire internet was pretty convinced he’d managed to break out of prison for a third time. Satirical news outlet News Examiner ran a story on the escape, which quickly began spreading online and became a Trending Topic in Mexico, the US and the UK.

The rumors turned out to be a hoax, and Hector Ramos of la Comisión Nacional de Seguridad de México has already confirmed that El Chapo remains imprisoned. But that didn’t stop some meme glory from taking over our timelines.
