People in Mexico Actually Went to El Ángel to Celebrate Leo DiCaprio’s Oscar Win

Last night, both Emmanuel Lubezki and Alejandro Iñárritu made history at the Academy Awards. Lubezki became the first to win the best cinematographer award back-to-back-to-back, and Iñárritu is the first filmmaker to win best director two years in a row in ~60 years (he’s also the Mexican national with the most Oscar wins). But in Mexico, it was Leonardo DiCaprio’s Best Actor win that got the party started.

Ahead of the Oscars, a Facebook event page popped up telling people that if Leo won his first gold statue, they should go to el Ángel de la Independencia to celebrate. “We’re planning on bringing teddy bears to show our support, and if you have other suggestions, please let us know,” the Facebook page reads.

It may have started off as a joke, but according to Noticieros Televisa, almost 250 people showed up to el Ángel. There were also celebrations in Guadalajara and Monterrey. Check out how it went down below:
