With Guillermo del Toro already having a successful award season run, it’s no surprise that his latest movie, Shape of Water, would rack up Oscar nominations. But today, when nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced, we learned GdT’s film led the pack, with 13 nominations. Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis hosted the announcement ceremony, joined by Rosario Dawson, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, Salma Hayek and more.
Though Latinos earned a few nominations, they were all for behind-the-camera roles. Once again, not a single Latino actor was nominated for any of the four acting categories. Below, check out the few categories where Latinos earned nominations.
Foreign Language Film
Chile picked up a nomination for A Fantastic Woman, going up against The Insult (Lebanon), Loveless (Russia), On Body and Soul (Hungary), and The Square (Sweden).
Animated Feature
Carlos Saldanha received a nom for Ferdinand in the Animated Feature category. The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Coco, and Loving Vincent were also nominated. Though Coco was nominated, co-director and writer Adrian Molina was not listed among the nominees.
Original Screenplay
Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor are nominated for The Shape of Water.
Director
Guillermo del Toro has yet to win an Oscar for Best Director, but he earns his third nomination with The Shape of Water. He will go up against Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), and Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread).
Best Picture
The Shape of Water (GdT is nominated alongside J. Miles Dale) will go up against eight other films: Call Me By Your Name, Phantom Thread, Darkest Hour, The Post, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
The Shape of Water also received nominations for Leading Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Film Editing, Original Score, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Costume Design, Cinematography, Production Design.
