¡Viva la mujer! The Athena Film Festival will be celebrating women-made media and showcasing a selection of Latina talent that is not to be missed. The festival takes place from Thursday, February 5 to Sunday, February 8th. All films will be screened at the country’s premiere women’s college, Barnard. Within the festival program’s selection there are films about blossoming female futbolistas, a survey of Mexico City’s female mariachis, and a short about a young girl intent on performing the ultimate civic duty. Here’s what your mama, your sister, and your inner goddess want you to see.

In the Game

The film follows a girl’s soccer team and the ways that culture and class affect the Latina players on and off the field. Central to their development is their intrepid coach Stan, who uses soccer as way to teach them to succeed in life.
