Moderno: Design for Living in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela, 1940–1978
Modern design in Latin America was an offshoot effect of the accelerated economic development that took place during WWII, when countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela were largely uninvolved in the war. Modern themes in design and architecture became symbols for fresh identities connoting progress and innovation. This exhibit at the Americas Society will be showing furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and printed material made from 1940 to 1978, all exemplifying the modernization of urban cities in Latin America. The show opens February 11th and will close May 16th of this year. There will also be a symposium this Thursday discussing The Invention of the Modern Domestic Space in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela: Design, Art, and Architecture, 1940-1978. This all day symposium (11am-6pm) will be held separately from the exhibit at Hunter College– 695 Park Avenue, North Building Room 1527, 15th Floor. The event is free and open to the public. The opening for Moderno will be this Wednesday February 11th at the Americas Society.

Alfredo Jaar: Shadows
Chilean artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar has a solo show at Galerie Lelong that will open with a reception this Friday, February 13th. Shadows is a show based on the photograph taken by Koen Wessing in Nicaragua in 1978 amid the Sandinista rebellion against the Somoza dictatorship. In the original photo, two women react to the news that their father has been killed. Jaar’s work responds to this haunting image. His use of light and illumination explore the emotions surrounding this period of war and violence.
The show will be up until March 28th.

David Ortiz: Law Journals
This two-week long solo exhibit by Brooklyn-native David Ortiz is all about pushing the boundaries of medium, and challenging art conventions of beauty and technique. ArtNowNY’s sneak-peek of Ortiz’ work seems very different than his body of paintings. Ortiz writes on top of the pages of printed law journals in a tagger script — it’s graffiti atop books on law and rules. Kinda funny.
The opening reception is Thursday February 12, 2015 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM in Chelsea.
