beGun’s January release, “San Francisco,” is still high up on all our future Best of 2013 lists, but the guy had to release something between now and December (even if that song is the auditory equivalent of dropping the mothafucking mic). So here’s another geographically specific effort, the less swaggered but equally ambitious “Madrid,” fresh off beGun’s performance at Madrid’s Día de la Música Festival. I’m convinced that the stretched-out, auto-tuned backing vocals are muttering the lyrics to Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody,” but I might be hallucinating or wishful thinking. In any case, the song is dense and lovely, an apt representation of what beGun can achieve.
