Now, this is something different. The cool guys from Spanish label El Genio Equivocado are giving away a cover version of Animal Collective’s “Fireworks,” made by Mequetrefe (not to be confused with Mexican producer Meketrefe.) The Galician quintet imprint their sound stamp on the AnCo single, injecting it with their characteristic blend of shoegaze and electronic music, showcased In their underrated last album, Gobi (2013, El Genio Equivocado).
The beautiful lyrics and melodies are now buried under a sea of flanger and muffled vocals on this fuzzed-out cover, and a looped rhythm carries the whole tune with little variation. The result is a little on the sloppy side, but they definitely succeeded in making the song their own, and that’s remarkable.
