DePEDRO-

“DON’T LEAVE ME NOW”

A Spaniard playing Tex-Mex? Today is the release date of DePedro’s self-named debut album. Jairo Zavala, aka DePedro, is a seasoned guitarist and singer who has played with bands such as AmparanoiaVacazulLos Coronas, and Calexico.

And it was his friendship and experience with Calexico which has influenced Jairo on his album, recorded in Calexico’s studio in Tucson (and the first full length release of National Geographic’s new world music label Nat Geo. DePedro has a coarse, deep voice which is sexy and nostalgic, very Spaniard even though the album sounds Western at times.

This free track, “Don’t Leave Me Now,” was written by Jairo for Amparanoia’s 2003 record, Enchilao, and is now part of Calexico’s regular repertoire. You can buy the entire album here.

Upcoming Shows:

DePedro performed a string of US dates in the States in June, more dates TBD.

DA’ ZOO –

“EXCUSE ME”

Are they reggaeton? Are they pop? Are they electro glam? They are all of the above. Da’ Zoo is a fusion group from Puerto Rico that is the future (now) of mainstream radio. In fact, this song “Excuse Me” (which is really in Spanish), is incredibly catchy and a huge hit in their native island.

With names like Charly Zoo, Yo-Fred, Raggi, and Eli-Joe (the fierce girl of the group), impeccable styling and even a cool-looking keytard (do they really use it or is it a prop?), Da’ Zoo is a rare major label-signed group which has its marketing right.  They have actually received very little help from Sony and have worked hard doing online guerrilla marketing to win over those teen fans. As we said, this is incredibly catchy….vamos a sacarla del parqueeee! (baseball reference).

Upcoming shows:

Almost daily in Puerto Rico. There are showcases in the works in at least New York, and Los Angeles…stay tuned.

UN MONO AZUL-

KARATEKA ZULU MIXTAPE

We know little about Un Mono Azul, just that his name is Fede Calderon, and in the words of ZZK RecordsGrant Dull he’s “this new kid from Mendoza.” Seems he’s on the rise. This mixtape includes rare remixes and mashups of El Guincho, Douster, Fauna, Matias Aguayo and…The Doors. And many more.

Lotsa new music on his Cooliado blog every week, check him out!

DJ SABO-

CUMBIA BLEND MIXTAPE

DJ Sabo (aka Will Sabatini) is one of the hardest working, buena onda, happy, down to earth DJs we know in New York. Besides catching him one Saturday a month at Bembe, been doing Fridays at Les Enfants Terribles in the Lower East Side and countless other gigs, he’s the guy to know at Turntable Lab.

Also, his popular Sol*Selectas releases keep coming, (purchase Sol*Selectas #8 by Sabo and Zeb here), and the forthcoming Bersa Discos #6 is all Sabo-produced. We loved this mix just published by The Fader, especially because you can preview four of the tracks that will be on Bersa, as well as favorites Uproot Andy and Frikstailers

Upcoming Shows:

Besides his weekly and monthlies in New York, Sabo will be all over Portugal and Spain this September.
