The 52nd annual Grammy Awards are this Sunday, January 31st, and Latin music couldn’t be absent. But even though “Latin music” now has its own Latin Grammys awards show, every year we can’t help but be startled at how they clump categories in the main awards. There’s “Best Latin Pop Album”, “Best Tejano Album…” And then one category called “Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album.” Now, of course rock and alternative can go in the same category…but with urban music? How can someone choose a winner from different types of music? That surely is going to be interesting to watch.
Here are the nominees:
Aterciopelados
Album: Rio
Country: Colombia
The multiple Grammy-winning band fronted by Andrea Echeverri is nominated for their latest release. Here’s the video of the song of the same name.
Bebe
Album: Y.
Country: Spain
The actress and singer is nominated for her sophomore album Y. (pronounced: “Y Punto”), which shows her musical breadth, not to mention, more feminine look with long hair.
Calle 13
Album: Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo
Country (in this case US Territory): Puerto Rico
The Grammy favorites are just like this category: they keep mixing it up, and it sounds good, even if somehow crass.
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
Album:La Luz Del Ritmo
Country: Argentina
The first group to ever win “Best Latin Rock,Alternative Artist” in 1998 before “urban” was even in the Establishment’s map, is now nominated for their first album since 2001.
Wisin y Yandel
Album: La Revolución
US Territory: Puerto Rico
The chart-topping duo show that they continue to step up their music while continuing to make catchy hits.
Our Predictions:
Who will win: Wisin y Yandel
They are the highest-selling, most well-known group from the bunch.
Who should win: Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
Yes, they are one of all-time favorites. Besides that, take into account they took a 7-year hiatus, got back together for a sold-out tour that spanned more than 50 dates all over the US and Latin America. If that doesn’t prove something, we don’t know what does.
