Set your calendars for April 14th, when Unity, Tony Succar’s Latin music tribute to the Rey of Pop, will see the light of day thanks to a collaboration between Universal Music Classics and Universal Music Latin Entertainment.
Oh yeah.
The project pulled together more than 100 musicians, including some familiar names like Tito Nieves, Jon Secada, and Obie Bermúdez, among others.
Legend has it that the project grew out of a Halloween show when Succar performed an arrangement of “Thriller” with salsa rhythms; the reaction was so positive that he decided to go ahead and record a full-band version of the cover in his room and uploaded it to the World Wide Web. Little by little, the track ended up in DJ rotations, and fans began requesting a full album of revamped Michael Jackson favorites. The full album will include the cover that started it all, plus “Billie Jean,” “I Want You Back,” and more from the MJ canon.
