You know how there are some things that you didn’t even know you desperately needed them until you have them right in front of you? This is one of them, for me at least.

Bocafloja is arguably one of the best and most respected MCs doin’ it en español and doin’ it well. I love listening to his elaborate rhymes on my headphones but I rarely, if ever, play his tracks on my DJ sets because they tend to be more on the jazzy, laid-back side of the spectrum. So yeah, I desperately needed some Bocafloja flowing over some funky beat like this, but the idea never really crossed my mind until the video came out.

A flashback tribute to the west-coast rap of the early ’90s (Bocafloja listed Dr. Dre’s The Chronic as one of his foundational influences), “Mecánica,” featuring Cambio (doin’ it en inglés) has huge crossover potential beyond the inherently hermetic, progressive Spanish rap scene, appealing to a larger audience thanks to widely relatable name-drops (Nate Dogg, Montell Jordan, The Native Tongues), the irresistible g-funk beat and, of course, the vocal sample of one Biggie’s most famous lines ever. Well done.
