After seven years, Metallica finally made their way back to Mexico. To make the experience more memorable, the iconic metal band covered songs by iconic Mexican ensembles Caifanes and Los Tucanes de Tijuana during their two M72 World Tour stops at the Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on Sept. 20 and Sept. 22 – and fans are thrilled about it.

Last night (Sept. 22), Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett covered “La Negra Tomasa” during their concert. After singing hits like “Whiplash,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and “Until It Sleeps,” the band surprised their fans with a cover of the classic song that Caifanes made popular in the late 1980s. Before starting the track, the band introduced the cover as a “canción bien chingona [badass song].”  With a rhythmic guitar and bass – and the audience’s help – the band gave Mexican fans a unique experience of “La Negra Tomasa,” originally written by Guillermo Rodríguez Fiffe.

Fans are excited about the cover. An X user wrote: “This is not a joke. It’s Metallica playing La negra tomasa today in CDMX. Enjoy.” Another X user commented: “@metallica just played La Negra Tomasa live in Mexico City, my night is complete.”

During their first stop in Mexico City (Sept. 20), the band also had a special treat. They performed a rendition of Los Tucanes de Tijuana’s “La Chona” on Friday. After saying they were nervous, the band put a rock twist to the classic track as the audience sang along. An X user wrote: “Metallica playing ‘La Chona’. Glorious.”

Metallica’s M72 World Tour is coming to the U.S. in 2025. The band will perform in cities like Las Vegas, Nashville, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Houston.
