Free Download: World Hood – "Elekes" (Sonora remix)

On its original conception, World Hood‘s “Elekes” was basically an uplifting, trippy song about getting high and invoking Yoruba deities, over an irresistible electronic dance beat. For its remix, the super prolific Texan producer by the name of Sonora, from the Peligrosa crew, could’ve taken the track in many different directions and for some reason he decided to strip it down completely of all synths and electronic sounds and replace them with guitar loops and some massive drums.

It’s a very respectful remix, keeping the same feel-good spirit of the original, and without messing with the vocal track at any point, just replacing the instrumental. The result is dope, and the track is equally effective, but it can also be a bit confusing. If I wasn’t familiar with the artist or the song and I was presented with both versions and then asked, “Which one if these is the remix and which one the original?” most probably I would’ve gotten it wrong.

Either way, it doesn’t really matter. Both versions are full of subtle beauty, so even if I don’t really know what she’s talking about, what’s an “Elekes,” or who are all those divine figures she’s name-dropping, you can still enjoy it and feel embraced by all those positive vibes. Oh, and if you like it, make sure you check out World Hood’s Mundo Libre EP too.
