Your Mix Fix: Divifilio

The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Divifilio
MIXTAPE: Raw Mambo & Bagalu Beats

Divifilio is a Bay-Area-based Peruvian DJ and vinyl collector who’s not very active in the nightlife scene (I assume because of his obligations as a father) but is constantly sharing new mixtapes online.

This one here is his latest one and it’s all about classic mambo and bugalú, and some modern takes and remixes of these genres. The transitions are, mostly, a bit rough, but it gets a pass because it’s mixed with real vinyl, something you don’t see much nowadays in these digital mixes. Unlike digital mixes, there’s no “auto-sync” button when you’re spinning real wax.

There’s music by Bio Ritmo, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Gerardo Frisina, and many others. Unfortunately, it’s just stream, no download link for this one.
