Your Mix Fix: DJ Supervixen (SPVXN)

The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Supervixen (SPVXN)

MIXTAPE: Um Olho No Gato, O Outro No Peixe

Carnaval just ended, Valentine’s day is now coming up and today I don’t have any mixtapes to share with you that explicitly evoke either of those celebrations. Instead I have this one, by our favorite Brazilian expat in Brooklyn, Supervixen, or SPVXN for short (remember her from Sunsplash?).

Um Olho No Gato, O Outro No Peixe (literally: an eye on the cat, the other one on the fish) is a popular Portuguese-language adage that means something like keep your eyes open, be alert, look both ways, etc. I honestly don’t know why she chose that phrase as the title of her new house-centric mixtape, and the sexy lesbo feline humanoids on the cover art confuse me even more. Maybe there’s a secret meaning to it.

Thing is, even though it’s not a Valentine’s day mixtape, per se, it’s overall sexy, in the best way house music can be sexy. Lots of sensual female vocals (including Supervixen who premieres one of her on tracks around minute 26 of the set) and some explicit sex chat almost at the end should be enough to get anybody in the mood for love.

So, yeah, if you were planning a carnaval after-party for this Ash Wednesday this might be just right for you. Save all the cheesy romantic ballads for tomorrow.
