The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

I know I’m gonna disappoint some people with the next statement. My editor is probably included among those people. But what the hell, I can’t even pretend that I give a shit about Valentine’s day. In fact, I hate it. But to be fair, I’m not crazy about any other of those holidays, Christmas, Easter, St. Patricks, whatever. So don’t take it personal San Valentín and all you lovers of romantic love and remezcleros who’re currently deeply in love and have been waiting for this special date to spend it with your super special someone. Anyway, this is not about me and why I can’t stand all the cheesiness surrounding Valentine’s day. And I have to respect other’s peoples decisions to be as corny as they want on this date. I don’t really know DJ Meketrefe personally, so I don’t know what his intentions behind this Valentine’s Day mix tape were. Maybe he did it “ironically” and that’s why he selected such an ultra-cheesy playlist. Maybe not, maybe he really likes Drake and T.I., I won’t judge. I leave it out there for you to decide. Meketrefe is the alter-ego of Enrique Enriquez (or Henry Henries). You wouldn’t necessarily guess by his selection because he doesn’t give away any clues to his nationality, but he is Mexican, from Mexico City where he started spinning as a teenager. He recently relocated to New York City where he’s starting to build a following, DJing all over Brooklyn and Manhattan. He also produces his own remixes, a couple of which you can hear on this mix tape.
