The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

Sonora is bringing hardcore perreo back. Remember that thing called reggaetón that everybody loved to hate a few years ago? Well, now that not even reggaetón artists are doing reggaetón anymore, the dembow (reggaetón’s quintessential beat) is up for grabs. And while for many the evolution of dembow aims in the moombahton direction, Texan producer Sonora in his latest promo mixtape takes it back to its underground roots.

Best thing about this new mix? It’s short and moves fast and smoothly from track to track, like a super concentrated set of pure high-octane perreo which, as we all know, could be lethal to the mental and physical health of the listeners if extended beyond the 15 minute mark. Sonora knows best, and he’s responsible about dosage. So we’re safe here, feel free to rub your nalgas against the closest pole.
