The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Whiskey Barons

MIXTAPE: Fania Mix

I’ve been trying to avoid featuring the same DJs twice in this column so far, this time I’m going to make an exception. Boston’s Whiskey Barons deserve this special treatment. They’ve recently released this great new mixtape that plays like the ultimate Fania tribute, with a funky twist, and will please both, orthodox salseros and break-beat fanatics.

This duo of top-notch remixers are at their best when it comes to bringing back to life old tunes and reinforce them with a funky back beat, and Fania classics from the golden age are particularly great for this because they are already pretty funky on their own. I’m not a salsa fan myself, but I can totally get down to this, so you should go ahead and give it a try.
