Psych rock is the new-old pop way of keeping rock fresh, with bands all over the world coming up with different ways of making unpredictable melodic rhythms. Latin America has been especially prolific practicing this sound, thanks to bands like Chile’s The Holydrug Couple, Brazil’s Boogarins, Costa Rica’s Las Robertas and Mexico’s Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. Now Spain will try and shine some kaleidoscopic light their way thanks to newcomers Baywaves.

The Madrid quartet is ready to release its debut EP Only For Uz, produced by Brian Hunt and mixed by Joe Walker of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Featured are the band’s calling card “The Freak Kingdom” and a previous song shared from this EP, the elegant and dreamy “Marsupilami.” Now, we get to share “Time Is Passing U By”.

The song features a main guitar line that echoes the Pixies’ “The Holiday Song” with a fluttering chorus effect and funky yet driving rhythm. The Pixies reference hints at the group’s creative inspiration, since they craft psychedelic rock without recalling the 60s, but more of a 90s alternative style practiced by everyone from The Flaming Lips to Tame Impala. “Time” is a hook-filled affair, groovy and shifting through its arrangement. There’s plenty of rocking and psychedelic atmospherics, while the outro is full of fuzzy guitars and good riffs.

Only For Uz EP will come out on March 25 through Foehn Records. Meanwhile, get trippy.
