Gabriel Garzón-Montano’s “My Balloon” Video Sets a Bad Breakup to the Stunning Backdrop of Cartagena

Gabriel Garzón-Montano’s video for “My Balloon” is set to some stunning Colombian backdrops. So why does everyone look so miserable?

Call it “Still Life of a Bad Breakup.” From an ornate dinner date to a dip in a flower petal-filled pool, each scene is as elegant as a Caravaggio painting. But Garzón-Montano and his leading lady are in the middle of some serious relationship turmoil, capturing the conundrum of being in the perfect place at the absolute worst time. Not even a boat ride into the sunset can get those two to crack a smile.

“We filmed this video on location in Cartagena and Las Islas del Rosario in Colombia. It’s a series of portraits of a heartbroken couple who are in beautiful places at the wrong time,” Garzón-Montano said.

The striking visuals come courtesy of Colombian filmmaker Santiago Carrasquilla. He was also behind Garzón-Montano’s most recent video for “Crawl,” which finds the French-Colombian musician dancing his way through a medley of animated shapes.

“My Balloon” is off of Garzón-Montano’s latest album Jardín, which he released earlier this year through Stones Throw Records. The Brooklyn-based artist just wrapped some shows in Europe and at SXSW, and he’s currently preparing to kick off a full U.S. tour May 8.
