Hurray for the Riff Raff’s “Living in the City” Video is an Ode to New York Girl Gangs

Alynda Lee Segarra grew up in a different era of New York. It was a time when you didn’t know if turning a corner could place you in front of a game-changing artist or if someone would snatch your wallet. In her new video for “Living In The City,” the Hurray for the Riff Raff frontwoman celebrates the women who fought for survival in Old New York.

The song is part of the concept album The Navigator, which follows the story of Navita, a street kid living in a dystopian future who is also a superheroine reconnecting with her roots and saving her people in the process. Since street life is such an important part of the album’s storyline, “Living In the City” is perhaps one of the most crucial tracks on the project. Navita is not alone in her pursuits, as she is part of the Mariposas crew, and they walk the streets together through thick and thin. As seen in the video directed by Giselle Bailey, Alynda and her crew dominate the city’s rooftops and doorways.

Alynda says about the video, “I wanted Giselle Bailey to direct ‘Living in the City’ because…I wanted to represent the New York City I grew up with. Women taking over public space and making room for ourselves in a society where we are so often threatened into hiding. I learned at a young age that survival in the city for me meant having a crew. Together we could move through the concrete maze and create some sense of freedom.”
