Ibeyi Take On Gender and Power in the “Stranger/Lover” Video

In their new video for their latest single, “Stranger/Lover,” Ibeyi‘s Díaz sisters are part of a power struggle with a set of mysterious male hands. Following the minimalistic beauty of the video for their self-titled album’s lead single, “River,” this one is made up of close shots of the girls performing the song in a dark studio set, while hands that reach from behind passionately grab and pull their hair and faces, representing a love that just won’t leave, even after it has finished. As usual, Lisa-Kaindé‘s afro is just spectacular, and the clip’s minimal, arresting aesthetic makes for a haunting four minutes.
