Lara Project’s “No Consigo” Video is an Indie Pop Dream

Venezuelan indie rock band Lara Project have just released their first video, the visuals for “No Consigo,” a wistful ballad about forbidden love and desire. At first, the track threatens to be just another a fluffy, cookie-cutter indie pop song, but the R&B vibes and mesmerizing clip proves the band’s got more of a statement to make. A pair of young girls watching TV (friends? lovers?) playfully tease each other over a soundtrack of melancholy strumming and a catchy hand clap hook. It seems pretty harmless, until one of the girls removes the other’s glasses and plants a kiss on her. The pair is then transported to a clearing in the woods, where they frolic and caress each other, free from the outside world. The lead singer thoughtfully croons about his desire: “no consigo la decisión que nunca tomarás.” It’s a compelling, emotive song about a lost or prohibited love, and the visual treatment tugs at the heartstrings. Lara Project has quietly been working on their upcoming debut LP Conexión in Puerto Rico, where they’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with Remezcla favorites Álvaro Díaz on a blissful slow jam titled Ojalá. Lara Project’s blend of folk-inflected indie pop and smooth 808 beats is promising and fresh, and their immersion in the Puerto Rican indie and hip-hop scene will help the band diversify their sound even further. There’s no doubt that they’re talented pop musicians, and their future is bright.
