Madrid’s Pional (aka Miguel Barros) continues to tease us prior to the release of his upcoming EP (his first in two years), titled When Love Hurts. He recently shared its first preview, “Casualty,” and it’s the kind of heartfelt, nostalgic dance moment we love to hear from him. From the sound of his new single “The Way That You Like,” this seems to the path he chose to follow for his latest project.

For “The Way That You Like,” he tapped synth pop producer Empress Of, who recently appeared on Blood Orange’s mesmerizing Freetown Sound track “Best to You.” The two producers previously collaborated when Barros remixed Lorely Rodríguez’s 2013 single “Tristeza.”

Pional himself called the tracks on his new EP the most personal music he’s ever made, so working with Empress Of – whose intimate 2015 album Me stunned critics – was the perfect pairing. On “The Way That You Like,” Lorely Rodríguez lets her love interest know she’s waiting for him, even though she knows their relationship won’t last forever. Pional told Pigeons and Planes the song is about a “toxic relationship.” “Call me when you feel right/I can be the one to hold you just the way that you like,” Rodríguez sings, as the irresistible beat pumps and the sentimental chord progression sparkles.

When Love Hurts is out September 30 on Counter Records.
